Schweiss custom-made aviation hangar door provided a perfect match to the Acheson family Hangar. Learn how Gary Acheson and his family crafted their state-of-the-art hangar and why they choose Schweiss as their aviation hangar garage door manufacturer.
The Acheson Hangar at Villeneuve
Villeneuve Airport is located in St. Albert, about 6.5 miles (10 km) north of Edmonton, the community is made up of 64,000 residents.
The exterior of Gary Acheson’s slick aircraft hangar in Alberta, Canada looks like the ideal place to store your prized plane, but just wait until you see how the inside sparkles.
Family means a lot to Gary and his wife. Their two daughters and their husbands have taken on the family-operated businesses, Sarasota Homes and Sarasota Realty in St. Albert. They buy undeveloped land, then build and sell homes on the development. With the help of his son-in-laws, Acheson finished building their new 6,000 sq, ft, wood hangar with a Schweiss Bifold lift strap Door.
The thought process and mechanical aptitude to create the auto-latch and strap system was quite ingenious. It’s hard to say one thing that I like best about my Schweiss door. I like the engineering, the quality of the door, I like the operation; the way it lifts up and down nicely and seals well and it was delivered on time. I don’t underestimate the importance of after-sale support that I think you guys did an excellent job on.”
– Gary Acheson
Schweiss Bifold Doors Add the Clean Look
The hangar is equipped with a 55 ft. x 19.6 ft custom-made Schweiss Bifold, aviation hangar garage door. The safety and security features are complete with auto latches, warning lights, horns, and an emergency backup system.
Modern Features of the new 6,000 sq ft. hangar include:
- Attached office
- LED lighting throughout
- In-floor heating
- High R-Value blown insulation in the walls and attic
- A comfortable lounge to relax in after a long flight
The spacious hangar is currently home to a four passenger Mooney Acclaim, a Cessna 182T Skylane, and a occasionally a Cessna Citation that belongs to a good friend.
Acheson has been a private pilot for about 20 years while both of his son-in-laws have about 10 years of experience in the air.
“I have a simulator room on one side and a lounge on the other side. The simulator is for the Mooney. We use it to keep myself and son-in-laws safe.”
Customer Service Reigns Top Priority at Schweiss
Our reputation for after-sale service is something we pride ourselves in at Schweiss Doors. When Acheson’s door arrived, the independent shipping company had delivered it damaged and virtually unrepairable. Although the custom-made aviation hangar door wasn’t delivered by Schweiss Doors, Schweiss Doors CEO Mike Schweiss went the extra mile to ensure Acheson received a new door delivered promptly.
“Nothing to do with Schweiss, but everything wasn’t rosy with respect to the door from the beginning…What had happened was half the door got damaged in shipment. When it was on the truck it was all bowed out; the top of it couldn’t even be repaired in the field. I was very impressed how Schweiss handled that negative – they recognized that it wasn’t right, and sent us a new half of the door. The point that I want to make is that Schweiss listened – your assessment was fair and you responded to our needs. What impressed me about Schweiss Doors too, is it is a family run business just like ours.” — Acheson’s words say it all!
Acheson chose to have a freestanding header for his new wood hangar because of the additional support it offers. The Schweiss custom-made aviation Bifold door was equipped with liner flashing to make the installation of the header a breeze. Acheson and his son-in-law bravely took on a few cold December days to install the door and freestanding header themselves. Despite the Canadian winter, the installation process went smoothly from start to finish.
“Another thing that I think is important too; there was nobody where we live that could install the door,” noted Acheson. “So what I ended up doing was reading the instructions. It took time, but on any other questions I had, I called Brent (at Schweiss Doors) on. The manuals were good and I’m really big on the after-sale support that Schweiss Doors offered. Brent was excellent. The key to the wood construction was using the freestanding header that you folks provided. Using that header made the whole system work extremely well. In respect to the freestanding header, it solved a lot of engineering problems.”
Acheson did his homework and put in the research before choosing a Schweiss Door.
“I took a long time looking at all different types of doors. I found the Schweiss door to be reasonably priced and there were a lot of good things you had on your web page that helped me in designing the building itself. Your “How To” videos helped me understand what to do and how your door system would work on my building overall. That’s important to know how the doors tie into different types of construction,”
As for choosing a bifold over a hydraulic door, Acheson took into account some unique needs for his hangar that put the bifold door first in his mind.
“I choose the bifold door over the hydraulic door because I thought it would have less lateral stress outward on the building. Obviously, snow is also an issue where you can open up your door right away and get your equipment out…I didn’t know it at the time, but actually I would say Schweiss is the predominant door at our airport. The Villeneuve Airport has been around for a long time, but just had a recent growth cycle with a lot of new hangar construction going in.”
