Schweiss Doors roots go back to 1980
It’s been a long and winding road since the inception of Schweiss Doors dating back to 1980. But during that span of nearly 35 years many doors “literally” have opened for what was at first a new start-up company.
Owner Mike Schweiss relates how he got started in the door business, “It was 1980. I was at a wedding dance. A friend commented, “Mike, you build lots of different things. Why not a door that folds up?”
Ironically, that very person died of a heart attack that same evening. But his idea didn’t!
At that time, Schweiss and his three employees were manufacturing things like farrowing crates for sows, snowblowers, farm trailers, tile plows and can you imagine something called the Schweiss Chicken Plucker!
He chuckles, “It was the Chicken Plucker that gave us name recognition, and in fact got us going financially.” His first Bi-Fold door measured 12 x 12 ft., and was installed on a Renville County highway shed, 10 miles from Mike’s country factory location between Fairfax and Hector, Minnesota. The door is still in operation even though Schweiss admits, “We made it wrong every which way.”
Success comes from more than one good man at the helm
Schweiss Doors is a family run business. But Schweiss Doors is acutely aware that a successful company is only as good as the people who work there. Schweiss realized early on that to be the best you have highly skilled employees. Schweiss computer programmers and inventory and quality control managers developed a unique computer program that details steel door components, right down to the hinges, nuts, bolts and total hardware of each door.
Three signature door styles lead the way
Today, Schweiss Doors manufactures three great styles of doors. Schweiss Doors revolutionized Bifold Doors with the introduction of the famous Lift Straps & Auto-Latches. The Schweiss Patented Lift-Strap System utilizes very strong polyester material, which quietly wraps on a drum giving the door faster lift. Liftstraps are rust-free, durable and longer lasting than steel cables. Strap doors now outsell cable doors hands down. In the early years, bifold doors all came standard with cables to raise and lower the door, but thanks to Schweiss Doors foresight, they are now 100 times better!
Schweiss Doors has cornered the popular one-piece hydraulic market. By reaching up and above the norm, we build them with better, bigger cylinders, wrap-around hinges, spherical bearings, and a powerful hydraulic pump system known as Red Power Hydraulics. It’s a door that is easy to install, and we also offer a Build Your Own Door Kit so you can save money by using our components and specs to build, weld and install your own door. We now have also patented a unique easy to assemble splice connection for very big doors to be transported on semi-flatbeds or containers.
During years of manufacturing doors of all sizes and shapes, requests kept coming in from customers who were impressed with the Schweiss door product line. Having their own brain storm they wanted Schweiss Doors to help them with their own personal door project to specifically fit their application. Schweiss listened and answered the challenge to design or make alterations to their door.
Bingo, that’s when the fun began to spread. We hit a few home runs and saw the need and requests for unique custom-made doors. That’s how our “Designer Doors” got their name.
Schweiss Doors announces new 20,000 sq. ft. factory expansion
Schweiss Doors, a leading manufacturer of Liftstrap Bifold Doors, powerful One-Piece Hydraulic Doors, and well known unique Designer Doors has constructed a new state-of-the-art factory electrical facility in Fairfax, Minnesota. The 80 ft. x 250 ft. building was necessitated by Schweiss Doors growth in the door market, propelled by the company’s innovative electrical door engineering concepts and expansion of its multiple door products.
The large building offers more than 20,000 square feet of assembly space for Schweiss engineering purposes. The electrical room is directly attached to Schweiss’s existing warehouse and manufacturing plant, effectively centralizing all the operations at the company headquarters under one roof for greater efficiency.
The new streamlined facility utilizes the spaces close proximity to the sales and marketing teams. It has energy-saving in-floor heat, overhead cranes, a 45 x 16 ft. bifold entrance door, another 18 x 16 ft. bifold door, along with a 16 x 16 ft. fast-opening hydraulic side door. Utilizing a five overhead trolley system, it’s easy to move hydraulic cylinders, new style Red Power units and energy-saving liner/insulation packages easily throughout the electrical room.
All this achieves the goal of offering our customers many new benefits while expediting delivery of all components in a very fast and timely manner.
Schweiss has rolled out a newly designed hydraulic “Build It Yourself” Door Kit. This cost-saving door kit can save you thousands of dollars. Schweiss designed a simple way for customers to build, weld and install their own hydraulic doorframe by following detailed plans.
This new staging area provides enough room to assemble components necessary for each door kit which includes a complete set of new heavy-duty end and center hinges with grease zerks, cylinder plates, cylinders and rubber seals and more. It also leaves room to manufacture the Red Power hydraulic pump systems that go into each hydraulic door kit.

Attractive and energy-saving liner and insulation packages
Our new building has also streamlined the process of delivering our newly introduced Schweiss liner/insulation packages that are now being offered to Schweiss Door customers. The clean looking, highly durable energy-saving liner/insulation package stops the cold transfer because the panels mount on the exterior of the doorframe. Highly-reflective durable liner package panels install quickly and easily with no exposed fasteners. The panels are stain-resistant, low maintenance and easy to clean. New to the door industry, it is the hottest insulation product on the market for large moving doors.
“This is another exciting step in the growth of Schweiss Doors,” said company owner Mike Schweiss. “We are committed to making Schweiss “Brand Name” doors the clear destination for customers to experience and get the best service and product in the industry and to continue having us looked upon as the industry “Door Leader.” The new facility better reflects our unique capabilities and provides a perfect match to the high caliber of people who work here every day. Building your own doorframe kit is not only rewarding but can save you thousands of dollars.”
For the past 35 years, Schweiss Doors has specialized in innovative door design, engineering, project management and construction of Hydraulic and Bifold Liftstrap Doors ranging in size from 6 ft. wide to 140 ft. wide and as tall as 60 ft. high. We also offer professional installation crews that travel throughout the country.
Schweiss introduces new easy access container unit
If you need a really easy access storage unit, Schweiss Doors has the answer. These newly designed Schweiss containers are perfect for a number of uses such as safe and secure portable sheds, workshops, a mobile office, storage for farm seed and chemicals, hunting shack, band stage, food and beverage stands; it can be used for most anything you can imagine.
Custom-built from the bottom up, the new Schweiss Container with hydraulic doors and specially designed cylinders for Schweiss Doors only, is unlike any other container opening system you’ll run across, and it’s portable.
“Accessibility is what drove this,” said Mike Schweiss. “As you drive through the countryside you’ll often see unsightly temporary storage units such as empty semi trailers or shipping containers sitting in backyards or beside the road as a result of factories overrun with places to store them. Everybody has a real common problem with these as they can only be entered from the back. Now, when you stack it full, how do you get to the front? It’s almost impossible. The beauty of this is the large side door that opens up the entire container changing the way people will store their things. It’s a much more friendly option,” said Mike Schweiss, CEO of Schweiss Doors
What makes it different? The major difference is in the powerful hydraulic door system. The “green doors” use powerful cylinders just like any Schweiss hydraulic door. But these cylinders are not activated with a compact electric power pump or hydraulic fluid or oil lines and the like.
Attached to the top side of each specially designed container door cylinder, is a motor that is rated to lift 5,000 lbs. from each cylinder and a ball screw actuator, the same type used on vehicle power steering units. The DC drive utilizes a 110 volt AC power supply. Each cylinder has a limit switch which stops the movement of the door when it reaches the wide open or closed levels of travel.
There’s more — safety is always a big factor. The linear activated 90:1 ratio worm drive enhanced safety feature keeps the door from running backwards and closing if there is no power going to it or until you activate your door panel open/close button or your remote control. These weathertight doors can also be equipped with photo eye sensors, door base safety edges, warning horns and lights, windows or other accessories.
Doors are constructed with 2”x2” strong steel tubing with a built in truss system for added strength. Containers have 1 1/2” insulation coated with 3/8” corrugated plastic giving an R-Value of 14.
There is no need to lubricate the big side door heavy duty hinges because they have maintenance-free nylon wear-resistant bushings and removable hinge pins. The hinges are not visible from the outside when the door is closed, giving the container a nice clean look. A hydraulic door on the end of the container operates with one hydraulic cylinder and has hinges with easy access grease zerks. It also has built in walk door.
The containers can be designed with a small room at the end that can be used for storage, a small office or whatever. The interior of the container can be equipped with a speaker system and LED lighting, making it an ideal container for multiple uses.
Should you desire to store this container where there is no access to electricity, the door can be manually run with a cordless drill or generator setup. Container doors can be built up to 50 ft. in length and have a built in support edge to prevent bowing. When the door is open it provides a nice shaded canopy and full access to the container from one end to the other.
What our customers are saying…
WITH SCHWEISS, IT’S ALL THERE
When you think doors, think “Functionality.” That simple word says a lot because if your product has functionality, it for certain is consumer friendly. So let’s start with a door that provides both shade and awning when open, yet readily drains summer rains and winter snow. That’s CREATIVE ENGINEERING! That’s Functionality. That’s Schweiss Doors. With Schweiss, it’s all there.
LISTEN TO THIS PILOT
“As a pilot with my own hangar, I wanted a SPECIAL LOOK for my hangar door that made me PROUD of both my AIRPLANE and my HANGAR. The Schweiss team delivered in spades. They gave me color choices to compliment the rest of the hangar. I got a walk-through insulated door with a “Custom Designed” window. Plus four additional “double pane” windows for great interior lighting. Since I heat my hangar, my Schweiss door has an R30 insulation value.”
“I had heard and read much about Schweiss Doors. It was exciting to hear Schweiss was now also offering a new design Hydraulic Door, again with absolute security. Schweiss calls it “auto lock” and believe me, that door is squeezed totally tight.”
“And thanks to their super convenient remote control unit, my hangar door is already open as I taxi up to my hangar. You tell ME what could be a better package!”
WHOMEVER I TALKED TO PRETTY MUCH SIMPLY SAID, “GO SCHWESS!”
“My airport operation has 24 hangars, each hangar is equipped with a Schweiss Door. Why Schweiss? Because I checked lots of airports, lots of hangars, and lots of door systems.”
“Pilots, airport operators, EVEN CONTRACTORS, whomever I talked to pretty much simply said, ‘Go Schweiss.’ They Give You More!”
“Trust me. That’s what buying 24 doors is all about. Full value, plus great service.”
SCHWEISS DOOR PACKAGE ARE THE “PEOPLE’S CHOICE”
Hydraulic & Bifold doors have been around for years. Schweiss with 35 years building doors just simply MAKES THEM BETTER. They’ve added NEW LIFE to the door industry. Schweiss doors can be the architectural highlight of an entire building. And with their manufacturing experience, I do understand why the Schweiss package is the “PEOPLES CHOICE.”
HERE’S WHY SCHWEISS WAS MY CHOICE
“Very important to me is that Schweiss Doors are tremendously functional, REGARDLESS of the weather. They do indeed beat anything on the market. When ‘door shopping’ my suggestion is to pay attention to the structural engineering of the entire door unit. That means check the heft of the tubular steel framing members, the welding, the electrical package, and of course the closing mechanism itself. Their patented Lift Strap opening & closing mechanism is a gem. It’s quiet, clean, quick, durable and is tremendously safe.”
THE SCHWEISS PACKAGE DELIVERS
“Sure I’m biased because I bought Schweiss. But I first did several comparisons of other brands and found out there are lots of ‘wannabes’ out there that just don’t deliver the overall quality of a Schweiss door. Yes, some offer ‘great looks’ but rugged, dependable doors with strong warrantees are the bottom line.”
“If you’re talking value, dependable performance, operational safety, overall functionality, and artistic looks, the Schweiss package delivers.”
“Yes, Schweiss now offers Two great doors. I chose the Schweiss hydraulic basically because ‘weather conditions’ are an issue where I live.”
MY CHOICE STARTS WITH HEAVY-DUTY ENGINEERING!
“When I built my hangar, I wanted a door that looks good, operates efficiently for many years, and provides a turnkey install job. The Schweiss crew delivered my door and installed it all in one day. And it’s guaranteed. That’s service. That’s quality, That’s experience. That’s engineering I can count on. That’s Schweiss. And that’s MY CHOICE!”
SCHWEISS DELIVERS A NEW LEVEL OF DEPENDABILITY, SAFETY, AND OPERATIONAL QUIET
“I take my hat off to the Schweiss team. Yes, Schweiss Doors have been around for a few years (34 I’m told) and that’s what makes them special. The Schweiss team didn’t rest on their laurels. They keep listening to US CUSTOMERS….for even better ideas. Like my request for a very special closure system. I didn’t want just another “Cookie Cutter” door. I wanted a CUSTOM DOOR, just for me.”
“No problem for the Schweiss team. They tell me every Schweiss door is Custom Built, to the exact specs of the buyer. You don’t get that manufacturing flexibility from any other builder.”
“Plus their time-tested Lift Strap opening and closing system creates a new level of dependability, safety, and quiet operation for their bifold door customers. And how about their new Hydraulic doors? Talk about a clean, rugged design. Equipped with a powerful hydraulic “Red Power” unit that drives two heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders, you’ve got super dependability.”
“That’s the added bonus of dealing with a manufacturer with experience, 35 years for the Schweiss team. NOBODY, absolutely NOBODY, has that much manufacturing history, experience and knowledge.
